The Arts & Crafts Tour

Dunfanaghy, Co. Donegal

Scenic Cultural

This drive is designed to visit the numerous art galleries around Dunfanaghy, as well as some of the areas of cultural interest along the way.

Start by dropping in to see Brian at The Art House, on the Main Street in Dunfanaghy, and then, pop across the road to see the beautiful selection of Irish arts and crafts in McAuliffes. Next drive up the Main Street for about 800 metres, call into the Workhouse, and then visit The Gallery.

Leave The Gallery, and turn RIGHT towards Falcarragh. After about 8 kilometres start looking for signs for “The Studio”, notice a small blue church on your left, and turn into The Studio on your left, BEFORE you get to the church.

Leave The Studio, and turn LEFT towards Falcarragh, but after just 400 metres come to a complicated little junction. Turn LEFT here, as left as you can turn, and after just a couple of hundred metres, see signs for Green Acres Quilts. So drop in and see Stephanie in her Aladdin's cave for quiltmakers.

When leaving Green Acres, turn LEFT so that you are now driving up towards Muckish Mountain. After a few miles, there is a minor junction, so turn LEFT.

You are now travelling around the foot of Muckish, and soon will come to the Bridge of Tears, so stop a while and be thankful, and then travel on up and through Muckish Gap. When you come to the main junction, turn LEFT, which will bring you to Glenveagh Castle, which is perhaps a day out in itself. After a few more kilometres, turn RIGHT signposted to Church Hill. Look out for a little road on your right after another few kilometres with a sign which curiously points towards the ground. Turn RIGHT, and soon come to an old monastery founded by St. Colmcille, as well as the saint’s birth place, marked by a large Celtic Cross. Then continue on this road to come to Glebe Gallery.

Leave Glebe Gallery and turn LEFT, and then turn LEFT at the first junction. When you come to the end of this road, turn RIGHT towards the N56. When you reach the N56, turn LEFT to head towards Dunfanaghy. If time permits, you can call into the Green Door art gallery and the recently opened Buttermilk gallery, both in Portnablagh., before returning to Dunfanaghy.
