Island Visits

While it is an absolute joy exploring the mainland Donegal county, there is something special about heading out to sea, and looking back at the beauty of the mountains and shore line from a distance.

Off the coast of Donegal are many islands, and the two most well known and interesting are Tory Island and Arranmore. Both islands have small populations who are proud of their rich culture, heritage and Gaelic language. Both islands also have a daily ferry service, making the islands accessible to everyone.

The ferry to Tory Island leaves from Magheroarty Pier, which is a short and very picturesque drive from Dunfanaghy and the boat will have you on the island in 45 minutes. Throughout the year, weather permitting, there are three crossings every day to and from the island, and during July and August, there are four crossings. So whether you would like to visit this extraordinary island and stay for a few days, or only visit for the day, there will be a ferry crossing for you.

A little bit further south along the coast is Burtonport where you can take a ferry over to Arranmore, Donegal's largest inhabited island. The boat journey takes a path which weaves its way past other small islands, perfect for taking some interesting photos along the way and you will land on Arranmore in 20 minutes. The Arranmore Ferry is the only island owned and run ferry service and it operates a daily scheduled service.
