Glen Village - Glen

PEACEFUL VILLAGE

The small hamlet of Glen is situated about 13 kms from Dunfanaghy and should definitely be visited while you are in the area, mainly for one reason, The Glen Bar.

The Glen Bar is a tiny place that hasn’t changed in about a million years. Previously a bar/shop, which was traditional in these parts, you can still see the two levels of serving counter - the high one for the men standing at the bar, and the low one for the women buying their wares in the shop. The low counter still has a metal rule attached for measuring cloth.

There is a picture on the wall of a golfing scene, which is easy to overlook. But if you look closely you will see that it is Paul McGinley, the 2014 European Ryder Cup Captain, sinking the final winning putt of the Ryder Cup many years ago. He has inscribed the photo with, “To The Glen Bar, my favourite Bar in the world.”.

To get to Glen, drive through Creeslough, and then turn left towards Carrigart. After about 6 kms, you come to the tranquil Lackagh Bridge - don’t worry, you’ll recognise it as it is tranquility personified, and you will have to stop if there are any oncoming cars. At the end of the bridge go straight on, do NOT follow the main road to the left. Glen is about 3 kilometres over the hill.

In recent years the restaurant in the Glen Bar has established itself as one of the best in the area. Outbuildings to the rear of the bar have been converted into a top class restaurant with an interesting menu, including several delicious fish dishes. It is advisable to book a table in advance, as the restaurant is very popular with locals and visitors alike.
